Studio Percussion in the Community

Part of our mission is to be an active participant in the community. We are one of Gainesville's best kept secrets! Here, we will take a little time to share some of the fun and exciting things that we do around town.

Save the Arts Campaign

Studio Percussion plays for the Save the Arts Campaign fundraiser following the School Board of Alachua County’s decision to dramatically cut back arts funding.

Hands to Love Camp, 2008Hands to Love Camp, 2008

Studio Percussion led a drumline activity at the Hands to Love Camp. Hands to Love is a Florida organization dedicated to bringing together children with congenital hand differences and their families in a safe environment where they can try new activities, share experiences and develop a support network.

Hands to Love works with medical professionals from coast to coast, from occupational therapists to dentists, to help children with congenital differences adapt to their unique needs and empower them to achieve.

Hands to Love also caters to the needs of parents and siblings of children with congenital differences, enabling the family to best support their child with a difference and to reconcile their own needs.

Beat: Rhythm in Unity

By Susan Hansen

Millhopper Montessori School opened its doors as a one room preschool in 1977. Now, celebrating 30 years and expansion up to eighth grade, MMS is excited to present the annual end of the year show. The show, Beat: Rhythm in Unity, showcases hallmarks of the Montessori curriculum weaved throughout lyrical storytelling of the evolution of rhythm around the world. The show will be performed on Friday, May 30th at PK Yonge auditorium at 5 p.m. It is sponsored by Pinch-A-Penny Pool-Patio-Spa and Scott Niehaus Air Conditioning and Heating, Inc.Meat: Rhythm in Unity is an aural journey spanning four continents and over one thousand years.

This show is an artistic portrayal of the rhythms of the world, from the arcane to the modern, presented by way of the visual and performing arts. Through song, dance, percussion, art, and poetry, the audience will be immersed in the rhythms that both unite us and show our individuality as a world.

During the show, audience members will be taken on an aural journey spanning four continents and over one thousand years. Art and poetry created by the students will be integrated throughout the performance to enhance the experience visually. The show begins with the big bang and out of the darkness comes the heartbeat of the emerging world.

The stage fades to black and the scene transitions to Native American drumming performed by first and second grades. Next, second and third graders bring African tales to life through storytelling and percussion. Martial arts and dance interweave as the audience is taken to Asia for a shadow puppet play presented by fourth and fifth graders. Finally, the middle school students sing and drum Caribbean beats and eventually present the music of the streets, combining poetry, percussion and a step routine. This year's show would not be possible without the generous support from our community. Other show sponsors include: Johnston Photography, Trunnell Construction Services, Watson Realty/Gigi Tajalli, Realtor, Tire Outlet, Inc., 13th Street Family Pool and Spa, the Hale family, W.C. Nettleton Family, and Southeastern Integrated Medical.
